How do you explain happiness? What is it that controls how happy you are? Find out about the science of happiness from Doctor Mike Evans.
Happiness means something different to everyone. When scientists explore happiness (what they call ‘subjective wellbeing’) they look at parts of your life such as work, family, friends, spirituality, contentment, and control to discover your overall feelings of satisfaction.
Your happiness is determined by: 50% genetics, 40% life choices and behaviour, 10% life circumstances. Whilst circumstances may be out of your control, how you react to them is your choice.
Material objects do boost your mood, but only for a short time. Lasting happiness comes from living in the moment, appreciating what you have, finding a sense of purpose, and valuing your relationships.
