An easy way to explain self-compassion is by looking at how you would treat a friend in a tough situation vs. how you would treat yourself. We can often be kind and loving towards a friend, but judgemental, critical, and harsh towards ourselves.
The key to being kind to yourself means accepting the fact that you’re human and won’t get things right 100% of the time. Mindfulness of your thoughts makes practicing self-compassion easier.
