Is body image and body confidence just what you look like? Find out about all the things that contribute to body image and your self perception.
A lot of people struggle with body image. Body image doesn’t simply mean what you look like- it involves the ‘individualistic view’ of how you see your body, how you feel within and experience your body (proprioception), and the ‘collectivist view’ of how you expect your body should be.
‘Self-objectification’ is the comparison of your body to those you see around you. This starts at a very young age, but in the age of social media, this has heightened body dissatisfaction.
‘Visual adaptation’ is when your perception of something you see regularly changes. The rise of social media means that seeing ‘perfect’ bodies regularly on your screen alters your beliefs of what a normal body is.
